We made it up! There are a lot of terms that use the word “Brand” floating around in the design sphere, and it might be a bit confusing for us to throw another one into the mix - but we like to look at it this way: designers all over the world use their own terms to categorise different parts of their own unique processes. For us, it makes sense to split Brand Design as a whole into two categories: the development of the brand, and the utilisation of the brand (hence, Brand Development and Brand Implementation).
This is where terms start to get a bit confusing, because technically, yes, Brand Implementation is just “graphic design.” But when you break it down, graphic design is a pretty vague and general term. We think it makes the most sense to recognise the term “graphic design” as the umbrella term for a huge assortment of design services and skills. Brand Development and Brand Implementation are necessary stages of the marketing process, and graphic design services are utilised for them.
So if we break it all the way down: graphic design services and skills, as well as marketing and research services and skills, are used to develop a brand, which acts as the cornerstone of any and all future marketing efforts. Once a brand has been developed, the brand can be used (or implemented) through additional graphic design services and skills for additional, more specific marketing purposes.
